Manchester United have a special, special talent on their hands in the shape of Mason Greenwood, and the club might well have a decision to make at the end of the season when it comes to determining the best course of action for the forward.
The Chalkboard
Greenwood only turned 17 in October, but he was on the bench for United’s Champions League clash with Valencia on Wednesday night.
Greenwood travelled with the United squad on their pre-season tour of the United States, meanwhile, and caught the eye with his pace and movement in forward positions.
The teenager has trained with the first team on a number of occasions this season, having scored 17 times in 17 starts for United’s youth side last term.
This season, Greenwood has managed 19 goals in 17 appearances for the Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-23s, and has a real chance of making the breakthrough at Old Trafford.
Despite only being 16, Greenwood was the leading scorer in the Under-18 Premier League North last season, and his talent is exceptional.
What are United’s plans for Greenwood?
The England Under-17 international, who has been compared to Marcus Rashford, will be more than happy with his current situation at United.
Indeed, the fact that he was on the bench against Valencia on Wednesday is incredible, although that was due to Jose Mourinho’s injury problems.
There will become a point where Greenwood becomes simply too strong for even Under-23 level though, and perhaps there might be a decision to be made at the end of this season.
Greenwood still needs to physically develop, and a stint on loan at a League One club might well be what needs to happen next season.
That said, if the attacker continues to find the back of the net on such a regular basis then Mourinho might want him as part of his first-team squad for the 2019-2020 campaign.
